Rally-O

The newest companion sport derives from Obedience and Agility. Dog trainer and Obedience enthusiast Bud Kramer blended elements of both to get the excitement of Agility and the practical skills of Obedience in a less intimidating form. Rally demonstrates how dogs can work as a team with humans to negotiate a course where Obedience skills are used on the go.

In Rally each team of dog and handler starts with 100 points with points deducted for handler errors, knocking over pylons, or failure to complete an exercise. The team must finish with at least 70 points for a qualifying score. Three qualifying scores under two different judges wins a dog a title. AKC has three Rally levels: Novice (Rally Novice or RN), Advanced (Rally Advanced or RA), and Excellent (Rally Excellent or RE). AKC titles are added to the end of a dog's registered name such as, Rosie Coyote RN RA RE RAE.

AKC Rally has a total of 48 exercises

Novice

  • Right and Left Turns-there are regular 90 degree, 270 degree turns, and 360 turns
  • About Turns-there is the regular About Turn,  a U Turn that turns to the left, and an About Turn-Left that turns the handler and dog into each other. (It resembles a dance move)
  • Call fronts with finishes-call fronts have a left (swing) or right (around) finish and end with a halt (the dog sits) or a forward (you go on with no sit)
  • Slow, Fast, Normal Paces-These are the same as Obedience.
  • Moving Side Step Right-Take a step forward and to the right.
  • Spirals-These are done around three cones circling one less cone each time. Spirals are either left or right.
  • Straight Figure 8-weave with dog through four cones and then back through them.
  • Serpentine-Like the Straight Figure 8, but you only go one way.
  • 1, 2, & 3 Steps-There are two versions: call fronts as you step backwards, walking forward and the dog sits at each halt.
  • Moving Down-you command the dog to down while heeling, then go on.
  • Fast Forward from a Sit-Just like it sounds.
  • Walk Arounds-You walk around your dog as they remain in a sit or down.
