Positive Training

Positive training is the application of Operant Learning to dog training. Operant learning was identified and experimented with by B.F. Skinner in the 1930's. The principle is simple enough: behaviours that are rewarding tend to be repeated, those that are not rewarding tend to cease. Skinner used rats and pigeons to make these conclusions, but we can see it in our own behaviour. We keep returning to a favourite fishing spot or restaurant because we find the experience satisfying. Places where we do not catch fish nor receive good service and food we cease to visit.

Skinner and his associates, including those who struck out on their own such as Keller Breland, were able to use Operant Learning to teach an array of animals to do useful and interesting things. Chickens have been taught to play tic-tac-toe, play the piano, and dance for expositions. Dolphins and Orcas have learned to jump hoops for aquarium shows. Ravens have learned to take photos for the military. Pigeons have learned to spot possible ambushes and alert squadrons below.

Operant Learning produces such reliable behaviours that it is used to train service dogs as well as dogs competing successfully in Agility, Obedience, Tracking, Rally, Herding, and Hunting.
