The AKC Canine Good Citizen program is open to all dogs allowing them to be tested on skills every well mannered dog should know. This successful program serves as the basis of similar programs around the world. Several states (including Indiana) have passed a resolution on the Canine Good Citizen program. Canine Good Citizen class builds on the skills learned in Family Dog preparing owners and dogs for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test and beginning competition obedience. Owners receive assistance to teach greeting people with or without dogs, walking with distractions, accepting handling, short stays with distance, being out of sight of the owner, front, finishes, beginning group stays, standing for examination, and heel position. Students take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test the last night of class. Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog class builds on skills learned in Family Dog preparing owners and dogs for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test and the Therapy Dog International test. Owners receive assistance to teach greeting people with or without dogs, walking with distractions including medical equipment and infirm people, accepting handling, short stays with distance, being out of sight of the owner, leave it, and accepting the presence of children. Students take the AKC Canine Good Citizen and/or Therapy Dog International test on the last night of class. There is an additional fee for the Therapy Dog International test.
